Kuehne + Nagel is expanding its position in the greater Hamburg area after cutting the first sod for a new warehousing and handling facility in Obergeorgswerder.
The 50 million euro investment will include a 45,000 sq m centre, on a 120,000 sq m plot of land which is situated by the motorway intersection Sued.
K+N is building the new facility to consolidate its contract logistics and overland transport activities in the area. The company says that combining these two sides of the business into a single location will allow for a “reduction of empty trips and leveraging synergy potentials”.
Construction of the site will take roughly one year to complete, with around 500 K+N staff planned to be working there by late summer 2009, including 100 newly created jobs.
