British Airways has awarded DHL Exel Supply Chain a multi-million pound annual contract to handle in-flight services for short-haul and domestic flights from Heathrow.
When the ten year contract comes into effect in April 2009, DHL will handle catering services for BA in partnership with its subcontractor and food producer Northern Foods which will prepare in-flight meals.
DHL will manage the entire supply chain from kitchen to cabin, which will involve transporting up to 13 million meals each year, along with in-flight retail and media and items for passenger comfort.
The logistics service provider will also be responsible for the wash up and waste management operations.
The contract boosts DHL’s presence in the aviation sector. Since 2001, it has provided supply chain services to BAA through the Heathrow Consolidation Centre, which serves retailers at the airport.
