Guy’s and St Thomas’ Foundation Trust has signed a five-year hospital logistics contract with DHL Exel Supply Chain, worth £7 million.
DHL will provide off-site cross-docking of products from multiple suppliers and, for medical surgical consumerables, will replenish the hospitals’ new Smart Store automated stock management.
The system will also control supplies held in operating theatres and wards, to help deliver a leaner supply chain.
The operation will be run from DHL’s dedicated off-site facility at Park Royal, which has ten years experiences in supporting hospitals.
David Lawson, director of procurement at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Foundation Trust, said: “The impressive track record of DHL’s hospital logistics hub at Park Royal was a key deciding factor during the selection process.
“The contract forms a key part of a wider strategy to fundamentally redesign the hospitals’ supply chain. The service will improve the reliability of the supply chain by helping the hospitals to proactively performance manage its suppliers.”
Guy’s and Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust won the prize for Innovation at the 2008 Supply Chain Excellence Awards.
