The Freight Transport Association has produced a guide that aims to advise shippers on optimising their use of bulk rail freight.
It points out that large volumes of steel, coal or aggregates simply cannot be moved by road efficiently, so managing operational performance of trainload bulk flows is business critical.
The guide, “Managing rail freight – operational performance for bulk shippers” is designed to provide best practice advice to enhance performance information flow, performance information analysis and allow for effective performance review.
In particular it focuses on establishing key performance indicators, such as train arrival times and train cancellations, to address any contractual concerns which might be directed at the operator, a third-party, the shipper or end customer.
