Viridor has signed a 25 year contract with Freightliner Heavy Haul for the rail haulage of municipal waste in the Great Manchester area.
Since the operation began last year Viridor has also completed a PFI waste and recycling contract with the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority, which will eventually take refuse derived fuels to a plant in Runcorn, Cheshire.
Mark Burrows Smith, Viridor’s north regional director, said: “Rail transport plays an important role in this PFI, in keeping traffic off the roads and therefore making a positive contribution to the climate change agenda. It was extremely important for us to find a haulier who could provide not only a quality service but deliver the reliability which will be required as part of our ambitious plans for recycling and creating green fuel for the future.”
Paul Smart, managing director, Freightliner Heavy Haul, added: “This is a long term project in which the transport link is vital, and Freightliner Heavy Haul is delighted to have formed a long term partnership with Viridor for the entire duration of the PFI contract.”
