There is no sector of supply chain activity that impinges on peoples’ lives more than Grocery and General Retail. Without it, there would be no cornflakes on the breakfast table or chips on the dinner table, no shopping for essentials – or for leisure.
It’s a sector that has been well represented in The European Supply Chain Excellence Awards. But the competition is tough with some of the world’s most proficient supply chain practioners falling into this category.
Tesco has been award winner in the past with its Tesco Direct operation and last year, it was joined on the shortlist by entries from Homebase and TK Maxx.
Homebase unveiled an optimised distribution centre structure. Project “Harry and Molly” involved the change of location of two distribution centres simultaneously without causing disruption or disturbance to the customer. It managed this complex task and maintained a 92 per cent service level throughout.
For the past two years TK Maxx parent TJX Europe has been working to take cost out of the supply chain and enhance customer service through more frequent store deliveries. This has led to a combination of centralised processing operations and regional cross-docking facilities, bringing into play sophisticated warehousing technology.
Can your supply chain standard comparison with these giants of the industry?
