Kuehne + Nagel has opened a new facility in Sochi, Russia, which will be involved in providing logistics and transport services to official contractors of the Olympic Winter Games 2014.
The facility is situated in close proximity to Sochi International Airport and new sea-river port which is currently under construction.
A total of 63 publicly funded projects are planned for completion in 2012 and require some 100 million tonnes of infrastructure materials to be transported.
Perry Neumann, managing director of K+N Russia, said: “We have been in contact with the Russian Olympic Organising Committee since early in 2008 and consequently became aware of the first companies to have been awarded the official contracts.
“We have appointed a dedicated Olympics executive, Irina Erokhina, who understands the challenges faced by Sochi City in detail. Being a local logistics professional she is able to co-ordinate worldwide shipments for the project and also manage the time-critical site construction logistics.”
A second co-ordination team for Sochi 2014 has also been established at K+N’s hub in Vienna. The team manages and controls the direct shipments by road from Europe to Russia.
After the games have finished K+N plans to maintain the Sochi facility as the region it is located in is considered the third largest consumer market in Russia.
