Scottish retail and distribution company and Spar wholesaler, CJ Lang and Son, has rolled out a voice technology-based WMS across both its ambient, chilled and frozen depots in Dundee.
The company services nearly half Scotland’s independent retailers fromthis dedicated retail depot. BCP’s Accord VoiceWMS was implemented first at its ambient hub, and then extended to its frozen and chilled operations with the opening of a new 30,000 sq ft frozen and chilled warehouse (an extension to the Dundee depot) in January this year.
Productivity has increased by some ten per cent, and picking errors have been reduced. CJ Lang describes the implementation as “the best thing we’ve ever done”.
When the companymoved over to the new site, it was able to do so without disrupting its 24/6 operations. Within three weeks the site was operating on voice, handling around 1,000 chilled and 300 frozen lines and some 250 chilled and frozen orders per day. Pick accuracy is now at 99.99 per cent and stock accuracy at 99 per cent.
Administration savings equating to two/three-man days per week are allowing administrative staff to be redeployed to more productive areas of the business. Further improvements are expected as operators benefit fromthe hands-free nature of voice.
