SDI Group has increased capacity at GSI Commerce’s distribution centre in Oldham by 30 per cent.
The project involved the installation of a two-tier mezzanine extension to an existing single-tier structure that provides 4,100 sq m of additional storage space.
GSI Commerce, the e-commerce and multi-channel systems provider, needed to expand its warehouse to handle recent business growth.
The new system will store a wide range of toys and fashion products on behalf of customers including Mothercare, Early Learning Centre, Peacocks and Reiss, using a manual picking operation to assemble orders for onward delivery to online shoppers.
The mezzanine structure will be used to store items either on pallets or within shelving designed to available floor space.
It incorporates an inbound and outbound conveyor system to transport cartons and totes between all three floors, while wired pallet gates enable the movement of pallets between each level.
SDI Group has also installed sprinklers, fire and smoke detection systems, standard and emergency lighting and power sockets.
In addition, the company will extend an existing maintenance contract to include two full-time engineers at the site.
Ian Mullaney, fulfillment director at GSI Commerce, said: “SDI Group has gone the extra mile to ensure the installation was completed in an eight-week period and to our required specification.
“The company has given considerable support that has provided a hassle free experience without any operational disruption, and we look forward to working with them again in the future.”
