Deutsche Post DHL is to test the Iveco Electric Daily, which the manufacturer says is Europe’s first 3.5 tonne e-vehicle.
Ten vehicles will be delivered initially and tested in operations during 2011. They will be used in parcel delivery at various locations in Germany, including Berlin, Bonn, Düsseldorf and Hamburg.
The Iveco Electric Daily has a reach of around 90km, with batteries that can be charged over night at the Deutsche Post DHL depots or delivery bases. E-vehicles are thought to be suited for driving in town with more start and stop traffic patterns.
Deutsche Post uses some 2,700 eco-friendly vehicles, including hybrid and electric drives, alternative fuels or modified engine electronics and aerodynamics.
