The Freight Transport Association has backed Network Rail’s route utilisation strategy for Scotland’s railways, but warned that the government must also support the investment.
Recommendations include boosting rail freight capacity by increasing the gauge along the East Coast Main Line which connects London to Edinburgh via York and Newcastle.
Chris MacRae, FTA’s head of policy for Scotland, said: “This investment mustn’t stop at the border. For a joined-up rail freight network to yield maximum benefits to business and the environment, W10 gauge clearance must apply to Scotland and England and this will require a political will that transcends borderlines.”
