Catering group Compass has chosen Brakes to deliver £300 million worth of goods every year to 5,500 sites across the UK in a deal, which the companies say, is the UK’s largest ever catering distribution contract.
The seven year contract starts in 2012. Brakes will provide Compass with a single multi-temperature delivery system consolidating distribution of ambient products, non food, frozen, chilled, fruit, vegetables, milk, meat, dairy and drinks.
The aim is to provide 5,500 Compass UK sites with all their product needs.
A similar strategy was implemented in Ireland in 2009 where the consolidation has removed 1.4 million food miles from the distribution network.
Compass specialises in providing food, vending and related services and generated sales of £14.5 billion last year.
Managing director Ian Sarson said: “This contract is the first of its kind within the UK catering industry, creating a market leading proposition for Compass and our clients for years to come. It will enable us to further reduce our environmental footprint and will ensure we are able to continue serving products of the highest quality and freshness to our customers.”
