Medtronic, the US manufacturer of medical equipment, has opened a healthcare distribution centre at Leipzig in Germany.
The site is run by Ceva Logistics which designed the logistics centre specifically for medical technology warehousing. It serves as Medtronic’s exclusive shipping hub for Germany and Eastern Europe.
Medtronic is reacting to increasing demand in Germany, and the centre also has inbuilt capacity reserves for the firm’s growing Eastern European market. The warehouse’s current area of 86,000 sq ft is expandable to up to 258,000 sq ft.
Ceva also has the option to build another facility of equal size on the same property.
Christian Weinrank, head of Medtronic Germany, said: “Orders by German clinics are usually delivered to the doctor and then to the patient within 24 hours. In the medical technology sector that can often mean the difference between life and death.”
