Heysham Port has seen a 25 per cent rise in ro-ro volumes in the past six months following a £1m investment in infrastructure improvements by operator Peel Ports.
The investment includes four new Tugmaster vehicles to accommodate the increase in volume and resurfacing of the freight park.
Heysham is a major gateway for the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man. DfT figures show that in the first half of 2011 Heysham handled more than 225,000 units, a 45,000 unit rise compared with the same period in 2010.
