UPS has ordered eight new sorters from Siemens to boost capacity at its European parcel sorting hub at Cologne/Bonn Airport.
Eight Variosort EXB 120 cross belt sorters should be installed by November 2013, and will boost capacity from 110,000 to 190,000 parcels per hour. The conveyor system will cover a distance of around 40 kilometres.
The Cologne facility is the main collection point for all parcels coming to and from Europe and is also the sorting hub for all onward shipments.
Each night, 37 flights from all over the world arrive at this sorting facility, deliver their parcels, and receive further shipments to be taken to their destinations.
