Rail freight operator Direct Rail Services has ordered a fleet of newly designed mixed traffic diesel locomotives for use in its intermodal and passenger train operations.
The Vossloh Espana Eurolight UK locomotives are a derivative of the Eurolight locomotive which are already used in Germany. They have been developed for the UK in conjunction with Beacon Rail Leasing and DRS.
They are due to arrive in the UK in late 2013. the locos feature a 3750hp Caterpillar c175 engine and ABB AC traction equipment delivering a top speed of 100 mph and genuine mixed traffic haulage capabilities.
DRS is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and has sales of some £45m.
It company was established in 1995 as a supplier of transport and associated services to the nuclear industry. As well as supporting the decommissioning activities of its parent company, it has been extended its services into a number of new sectors.
