Sainsbury’s has awarded a three year contract to Wincanton to provide warehousing and distribution services in London.
Wincanton will manage Sainsbury’s distribution centre at Thameside in south east London. It currently manages Sainsbury’s distribution centre in Greenford, West London and, with effect from the early part of 2013, will collectively manage the logistics operation for the majority of Sainsbury‘s Local stores across London.
The operator plans to focus on shared management of the Sainsbury‘s Local stores across London with a single transport fleet to gain maximum efficiency from its vehicle fleet and warehousing operations. This will also minimise impact on the environment and cut congestion.
Chris Marrow, director of logistics operations at Sainsbury’s said: “As expected, their strategy for our Thameside DC builds on our shared experiences at Greenford, but goes much further by seeking to maximise synergies through a collaborative and innovative transport approach and shared resources across the management and administrative teams.”

Outside London, Wincanton manages Sainsbury’s distribution centres at Northampton and Sherburn, as well as being the sole provider of its port to DC container movements in the UK.
Wincanton chief Eric Born said: “We are delighted to be extending our long-term partnership with Sainsbury‘s and believe this agreement is testament to both the creativity and innovation that our service offering delivers for customers.”
