Rail freight moved, measured in tonne-km, was up ten per cent in the year to April, according to figures from the Office of Rail Regulation.
Freight lifted, measured in tonnes, was up by 13 per cent over the same period, and intermodal traffic was up 11 per cent year-on-year.
Maggie Simpson, policy manager at the Rail Freight Group, said: “These results show the immediate benefits of the significant infrastructure investment by government and Network Rail in gauge clearance, and longer trains, as well as the considerable investment in ports, terminals and rail equipment.”
