Network Rail has got Department for Transport approval for plans to upgrade the freight route from Felixstowe to Nuneaton.
The removal of a bottleneck near Ipswich will enable freight trains carrying containers to travel more directly from the Port of Felixstowe to the markets in West Midlands, north-west England and Scotland without having to travel through north London, which they currently do, making a valuable contribution to the economy.
It reckons that the Ipswich Chord scheme will take up to 750,000 lorry journeys off the road every year once it is completed in early 2014.
