UPS and FedEx have each pledged more than a million dollars to support aid efforts in the wake of the Super-storm Sandy which struck the North East United States last week.
UPS pledged $1.5m while FedEx has committed $1.2m in cash and in-kind support.
“FedEx team members around the globe are deeply saddened by the loss of life and devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy,” said Frederick W Smith, chairman, president and CEO of FedEx Corp. “We will continue to work closely with several humanitarian and disaster relief organisations to assess the needs across the northeast and provide support to the areas hardest hit by the storm.”
UPS’s financial and in-kind contribution is comprised of a $250,000 grant to the American Red Cross to help with the sheltering needs of the victims of Sandy, $250,000 in logistical aid for urgent response and an additional $1 million in cash and in-kind support to a variety of relief organisations throughout 2013 to assist in the long-term recovery of communities affected by the storm.
FedEx will provide monetary or in-kind transport support to the following relief organisations to assist with their relief efforts: The American Red Cross, The Salvation Army, Heart to Heart International, and Direct Relief International. This support will allow these agencies to provide humanitarian relief to the hurricane victims, including food, shelter, clothing, medical supplies, and hygiene kits.
Eduardo Martinez, president of The UPS Foundation said: “The victims of Sandy are facing many challenges and UPS is committed to helping them get back on their feet by donating financial and logistical support to the American Red Cross and other organisations that will be providing assistance in the days, weeks and months ahead.”
