Wincanton is looking to improve fuel efficiency by five per cent with a new system for automatically adjusting the roof of a commercial vehicle to improve its aerodynamics.
It has order 115 tractor units fitted with sensors that automatically adjust the vehicles’ roofs so they are at their aerodynamic optimum according to the height profile of the trailer they are pulling.
The units – 90 Mercedes Benz Actros and 25 Renault Premiums – will initially be used by the company’s containers division but are versatile enough to be deployed to any part of the business as and when required.
Ian Wilson, managing director of Wincanton’s containers division, said: “This brand new automatic sensor system is a considerable breakthrough in our efforts to create the most efficient, cost-effective and, importantly, environmentally-friendly supply chains available.”
