Wincanton has become the first operator to be granted licences to use 14.6m and 15.65m longer semi trailers (LSTs) in Northern Ireland.
The UK government is now a year into a decade-long trial of LSTs, with Wincanton one of those operators taking part and feeding back their findings to the Department for Transport. But so far the LSTs have not reached Northern Ireland.
The vehicles are being used predominantly to transport retail goods from the North West of England into Northern Ireland.
Wincanton currently has 69 licences to operate longer semi trailers with the vehicles mostly deployed in the retail and manufacturing sectors.
The Department for Transport reckons LSTs can create up to £400m in savings for the transport industry a year and reduce annual CO2 output by some 160m tonnes.
