Tesco’s distribution centre at Barlborough near Chesterfield is to remain open as a general merchandise centre. The retailer set out plans to close it earlier this year as part of a distribution network reorganisation.
A company spokesperson today confirmed: “We have reviewed our non-food operation and found a way of keeping our Chesterfield distribution centre open as a general merchandise centre.
“We are pleased that this means all our colleagues at the site will be able to continue working for Tesco in Barlborough.”
In February the supermarket giant said the site would close resulting in a cut of around 400 jobs. The plan also involved the opening of wo new sites in Reading and Dagenham.
Tesco’s decision, to reorganise its distribution centres at the time, was made in with the aim of moving products closer to its stores, and to keep up with its growing convenience business in the South East.
