Retailer Poundland has exchanged contracts with Lynton Developments, after gaining planning permission earlier this summer on a 350,000 sq ft distribution centre in Harlow Essex.
The £40 million warehouse will operate as the retailer’s main hub for the South East and will create up to 650 jobs.
The retailer, which operates more than 480 stores across the UK and Ireland, will work in partnership with Lynton Developments to redevelop the 20 acre former Pitney Bowes and GlaxoSmithKline sites at the Pinnacles off Elizabeth Way in the town and replace all of the current buildings with a brand new purpose built facility.
Poundland’s national property portfolio manager, Ben Wall, said: “Poundland continues to grow its store estate rapidly, with 69 new stores opened in 2012/2013 and a minimum of 50 new stores planned for 2013/2014. This new South East distribution centre will provide an eco-friendly, high specification distribution hub for the South East and ensure that, as the store portfolio grows, we can continue to deliver amazing value to our customers every day.
“Following an extensive search for the right space, we are extremely pleased that the development of our new South East Regional Distribution Centre will take place in Harlow.”
Only last year Poundland opened a 200,000 sq ft distribution facility in Hoddesdon to facilitate its growth in the South East.
