Operators at ports and other cargo handling facilities must employ effective procedures, training and safety technology, says freight transport insurer TT Club.
The company has revealed that an “overwhelming frequency” of incidents resulting in bodily injury or damage to property, equipment and cargo, are avoidable.
It said that employing such measures would reduce risk, as well as bringing commercial benefits such as lower insurance premiums and higher levels of customer service.
TT Club also said a mix of a physically secure site, rigorous checks and double-checks on paperwork and well-trained staff, could combine to prevent theft at cargo handling locations.
