Asda Logistics Services has opened its £55 million chilled distribution centre in Avonmouth, as part of a £70 million investment.
Built on a 50-acre site, the 492,000 sq ft warehouse will support Asda’s expansion plans in the South.
The company says it has capacity to support 78 of its superstores and 45 of its supermarkets.
The new site replaces Asda’s old depot at Portbury Dock Industrial Estate, four miles away, from where some 600 members of staff have been transferred.
It includes carbon and energy efficiency features, such as rainwater harvesting, combined heat and power, and occupier lighting.
“This is a milestone both for the local community and Asda’s future in the South West,” said general manager, Phil Chapman.
The overall site also features Asda’s new Recycling Centre, which is set to begin operations in early 2014.
