Ocean freight is playing technological catch-up with the rest of the freight sector, according to a survey of shipping industry professionals conducted by INTTRA Technology, which also found that the industry’s top technology priority is improving supply chain visibility.
The INTTRA Technology Outlook surveyed shippers, carriers and freight forwarders from around the world. Of those polled, 77 per cent said that ocean shipping was playing catch-up, falling behind, or making little to no progress.
Almost half of respondents (47 per cent) highlighted a “very urgent” need for their companies to invest in new technologies to compete in 2015.
Seventy one per cent of respondents said that they were comfortable initiating and managing shipments from a mobile device; reluctance among the remaining 29 per cent was due to lack of functionality and security concerns.
