Network Rail can now remotely monitor and control its rapid response vehicles having upgraded its existing fleet management system to improve the operation of the vehicles, which are permanently on hand to offer ‘first aid’ in rail operations including tackling track or signalling problems before an engineer arrives.
The system, upgraded by Eagle Eye Telematics, enables a control manager to track the whereabouts of each vehicle in his area from a central base station, and allocate resource to an incident based on proximity and availability.
In addition to driving greater fleet efficiencies, the latest system also adds a new level of security – Network Rail can set ‘permissions’ for each vehicle, such as geographical restrictions, and will be alerted if the permissions are exceeded so that the appropriate action can be taken.
Eagle Eye has so far supplied fleet management systems to Network Rail in its London and North-eastern route.
