Hugging, clapping and punching the air – this is the moment that Telefonica O2 UK realised that they had won the overall award in the 2009 European Supply Chain Excellence Awards.
“Totally delighted,” is how an elated Nick Lefever, general manager of supply chain for Telefonica, described his team, which picked up the supply chain award for Hi-tech, Communications & Electronics, and a special award for Sourcing & Procurement – as well as the Overall Winner award.
“We decided this year to improve the pride in the team by submitting an entry. We wanted to show the industry what we could do. We were quietly hopeful that we would win something, but we never dreamed we’d win three. And to win Overall Winner is just unbelievable,” he said.
And Peter Surtees, who won the Individual Contribution Award, said he was “stunned”. “I’m very surprised. I seriously thought Nestle would win. Chris Tyas is a great friend of mine, and I really thought he’d get it.”
Kimberly-Clark’s recent collaboration work with Kellogg’s has been a highlight of the year, being the first real expansion on the collaboration theme since its work with Unilever. “I’m very single- minded,” said Surtees. “I seriously believe that collaboration is the way forward for this industry.”
The awards this year have broken all records – more entries than ever before, more companies making it to the shortlist, and more people at the Awards dinner than ever before. In fact, the event was a sell-out – filling the Ballroom at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London’s Mayfair.
That’s remarkable, given the events of the past year. At the time of the 2008 Awards ceremony, many companies were only just beginning to feel the effects of the recession. Now companies are looking forward to the recovery.
It’s clear that the recession has made companies take a hard look at their supply chains. For some (though not for our winners) that must have been a shocking experience: supply chains that were over-extended, with poor visibility, and vulnerable to disruption.
Continued on page 25Continued from page 19But it has also been an opportunity to move supply chain up the agenda, seek out best practice and innovation, and extend collaboration across the industry. There was plenty of evidence from the Awards entries that companies have been taking a proactive approach in developing their supply chains to take advantage of any economic recovery.
The European Supply Chain Excellence Awards play an important role in encouraging best practice in the industry. This is the fourth year running that they have been undertaken in partnership with PRTM, one of the world’s leading operational strategy consulting firms. And supporting this year’s Awards through their generous sponsorship were: Toyota Material Handling, and Kewill.
The evening prize-giving event was hosted by legendary television journalist Jonathan Dimbleby, who announced the winners of the 14 trophies to the expectant audience that this year included over 60 shortlisted companies – all having scored highly with their initial questionnaire.
The European Supply Chain Excellence Awards remain unique in their rigorous approach to analysing, assessing and judging the many applicants from the full spectrum of European industries. Those finalists selected for the shortlist were required to offer further in-depth information to the judges and each company was asked to make a presentation to the assessors – this included comprehensive questioning from the judges.
This year the judges were unanimous in their decision and were confident that they had found yet another very worthy Overall Winner in Telefonica O2 UK. Once again the Overall Winner comes from the hi-tech & communications sector, following previous hi-tech wins from Nokia Siemens Networks last year, Infineon in 2007, Dell in 2004 and Cisco Systems in 2002. In many ways this is hardly surprising, given the highly competitive customer service requirements, dynamic nature and cost pressures that exist in this industry sector.
But apart from Telefonica O2 UK there are groundbreaking wins to hear about from Daimler Trucks, Carlsberg UK in partnership with Gist, Henkel, The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, British Sky Broadcasting, Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics, Ikea franchisee Fourlis Group, Babcock – Networks Division, and GlaxoSmithKline.
Partners:
PRTM Management Consultants are delighted to partner Supply Chain Standard for a fourth year with the 2009 European Supply Chain Excellence Awards. Ever since our founding in 1976, PRTM has shone the spotlight on Operations – the component of the business world that often goes unheralded. In the mid-1980s, in a series of executive seminars we conducted on behalf of the then-fledgling American Electronics Association, we talked about a cross-functional set of integrated processes that we called supply chain management. By the mid-1990s PRTM had led the development of the Supply Chain Operations Reference-model (SCOR), now widely adopted by industry through the Supply Chain Council. Since then we have worked on almost 2,000 supply chain projects at over 600 organisations across a broad spectrum of industries. We have helped some of the world’s leading companies turn their supply chains into sources of competitive advantage, with shorter lead-times, higher levels of customer service and lower costs.
During this time PRTM has compiled what is generally acknowledged to be the most comprehensive and leading database of supply chain benchmark information available today. Not only are we able to benchmark the performance of a company’s supply chain, we are able to benchmark the practices that lie behind it. This unique combination ensures that our clients are able to rapidly apply the latest thinking to transform their supply chains to deliver competitive advantage in the shortest possible time.
