This year the shortlist came down to five candidates for the trophy, two from the utilities, one healthcare trust, an aid organisation and a national food administration.
Aidmatrix Foundation partners with governments, charities, corporations and donors to provide supply chain management for humanitarian relief. Over 35,000 partners use its supply chain network and the foundation has made improvements, particularly around IT, and has extended its network.
Sweden’s National Food Administration – Livsmedelsverket – has been established to ensure the provision of safe drinking water in the event of an emergency. Four depots have been put in place and materials are stored and shipped in 20ft sea containers ready for deployment to disaster areas.
From the utilities sector, Northern Gas Networks’ entry was focused on a transport solution provided by United Utilities and involving the modernisation of the 640-strong NGN service van fleet, covering vehicle acquisition, the supply of on-board equipment and backed up by a whole-life 24/7 fleet management support service.
However, the two front-runners in the category were: E.ON (UK) and The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The E.ON (UK) entry was based on a long established relationship between the utility company and its logistics service partner, Ceva Logistics. It was clear to the judges that the traditional boundaries between the two organisations had been successfully blurred, enabling E.ON to leverage the benefits of a flexible, open book commercial arrangement.
But it was the entry and presentation from The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust that impressed the judges the most. The Trust’s demand-driven solution to ensuring that the right surgical product is delivered at the right place, at the right time, had the edge. In the words of one judge: “this approach is absolutely sector changing”.
