Port of Tyne Distribution is now ‘greener’ than ever due to using a new type of fuel in the 56-vehicle fleet.
The UK Government and the European Commission are actively encouraging the use of diesel fuel that incorporates materials from renewable sources, commonly known as Bio-Diesel. This road fuel normally comprises 95% Ultra Low Sulphur Derv (ULSD) and 5% Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME).
John Tye, general manager of Port of Tyne Distribution, says: “We have worked closely with Scania and Volvo to progress the use of Bio-Diesel and have recently received the confirmation that this fuel is compatible with the engines and can be used.”
The fuel is now being used and monitored. In addition to the environmental benefits, there are also economic paybacks to be gained as it is hoped there will be a slight improvement in the mile per gallon figures.
