JD Sports, one of the largest retailers of sports and leisure goods in the UK, is using nearly 200 Datalogic Viper RF-3 portable data collection terminals at two of its distribution centres.
The Viper terminals were supplied by Europdata Connect, a leading distributor of Datalogic’s product range across its European network, and are used within JD Sports’ warehouse systems for any process that involves movement of stock including goods receiving, storage and shipping.
Following evaluation of three potential suppliers, JD Sports chose the Viper for its robust build quality, being engineered to withstand multiple 1.8m drops to concrete with an internal antenna to prevent breakage. Gary Plumpton, distribution manager at the JD Sports distribution centres, says: “Datalogic listened to our needs and even made design changes to certain aspects of the Viper to accommodate the intensive demands upon it in our warehouses. When there have been teething problems, as there inevitably are when you put a product through its paces in a really testing environment, they’ve been quick to acknowledge the situation and respond with a solution.”
The Viper makes communications management straightforward in both new and existing installations. Its large LCD display – one of the largest available on a pistol-grip terminal – and spacious, intuitive keyboard are combined into a user interface that improves efficiency at the point of data collection. To maximise functionality, Viper has been developed as a modular system, where batteries, keyboard, scanning engine and WLAN can all be tailored to meet
