Having reviewed its materials handling requirements, Northern Cargo Services (NCS) has placed a major contract for the supply and maintenance of its entire materials handling operations with Barloworld.
NCS, the largest general stevedore at the Port of Hull, says the aim of the review was to have just one truck and maintenance supplier so that it could concentrate on its core activity of stevedoring, thereby making cost reductions. This was necessary as the existing fleet comprises a mix of short- and long-term rental trucks from several suppliers, leading to varying costs.
The new lift trucks, ranging from 2,500kg to 7,000kg capacity, are being used on the docks primarily for paper reel handling and container stuffing for major customers such as UPM Kymmene, Finnlines, M-Real, Jewsons, Holmen and Ahlmark Lines.
Barloworld has its own workshop on the docks which serves as a base for ten engineers.
