Yearsley Cold Storage and Distribution has started building its new depot in the North-east. Located at Seaham in County Durham, the depot will enhance the company’s national distribution network as well as form part of its strategy to build cold stores in areas that are close to both manufacturers and retail regional distribution centres.
Trafford Park-based Russells Construction is the main contract for the project having completed a cold store recently at Yearsley’s head office site ahead of schedule. The Seaham cold store is being constructed in three phases. Phase 1 means there will be space for 9,500 frozen and 1,500 chilled mobile pallet sites. Phase 2 is expected to be completed by the end of 2004 and Phase 3 during 2005 to give a total capacity of 33,000.
The cold store is expected to become operational next June, and will initially create 50 jobs. And further expansion is planned elsewhere, with sites already being looked at in the South and Scotland, says managing director Harry Yearsley.
