In a major move that will prove pivotal in the continuing development of Comet’s supply chain strategy, the electrical retailer is opening a new distribution centre in Skelmersdale. At 42,780sq m the new site will be the largest Comet building ever erected – at full capacity the centre will employ almost 300 people, and will serve nearly half of all Comet stores and home delivery platforms.
The new distribution centre will serve all of Comet’s northern and Scottish stores with large goods, as well as provide warehousing for returned and pristine stock. Pristine warehouse operations will be run by third-party logistics provider Exel, with whom Comet has an established relationship.
Stephen Pooley, head of Comet’s supply chain, comments: “This is clearly a massive investment in our distribution network, as well as the area and people of Skelmersdale, which just goes to underline Comet’s continued commitment to staying at the forefront of electrical retailing.”
The new distribution centre in Skelmersdale is scheduled to open in July 2004, with the 38-week building programme having already started.
