Logistics provider Yearsley Cold Storage and Distribution is investing £5M to add a 47,000cu m cold storage and chilled unit at its Heywood head office in the North-west. The site already has 140,000cu m of cold storage and the additional space will accommodate new business.
Trafford Park-based construction company Russells has been appointed as the main contractor.
Yearsley Group managing director Harry Yearsley explains: “The project was awarded to Russells on a design and build basis to integrate with previous phases built at the site. Building a store that has to work at -30°C is specialist work and we felt that we could combine our knowledge of how the store needs to function alongside Russells’ construction experience to a successful conclusion. We also require the cold store to be built in the shortest possible timescale following our acquisition of several new contracts and Russells provided a fast track programme to do this.”
The new store will feature the latest proven technology available. Six pallet high remote-controlled mobile racking will give a 10,000 pallet capacity for both chilled and cold storage, and seven load bays will house a variety of docking systems to take a variety of vehicles from rigids through to double-deck trailers.
The work is expected to be completed by January 2004.
The expansion will give Yearsley a cold storage capacity of 45,000 pallets in the North-west and more than 80,000 mobile pallet sites nationwide.
