Winner: Aircraft Carrier Alliance in Partnership with Wincanton
As always, the Public Sector, Services & Utilities category was a difficult Award to judge owing to the great diversity of entries. But, after much deliberation, it came down to two entries.
The Area 3 Supply Chain Community consists of 28 organisations working in partnership to provide maintenance and improvement for motorways and truck roads in Area 3 (Hampshire, Surrey, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Dorset and Wiltshire). A step change in culture has resulted in efficiency savings of £21 million over 2.5 years, a faster response to emergency works and a reduction in reported injuries.
The Aircraft Carrier Alliance is responsible for delivering the QE Class aircraft carriers – the largest, most complex and highest value single build programme that the UK defence industry has ever undertaken. The Alliance, along with Wincanton, has introduced innovative supply chain practices for the defence sector. Over a hundred companies are manufacturing parts for the project, the vast majority of which are stored and delivered to the build sites on a just-in-time basis – from 10mm washers to a 22m, 40-tonne propeller shaft.
The judges reflected on the fact that the project was over budget. But in recognition of the excellent supply chain practices that underpin the project, the judges decided it should get the Award.
