Retail sponsored by Toyota Material Handling UK
Winner: Travis Perkins
Retail is always one of the toughest categories to judge, and this year was particularly difficult for the judges, resulting in the decision to Highly Commend, not just one, but two runners up.
From growing trees and producing cocoa, Hotel Chocolat controls the process through to distribution. The judges said:?“Hotel Chocolat redefined vertical integration in the retail sector with its supply chain that stretches all the way from the trees to the customer in an excellent effort to control the supply and delivery of chocolate.” The judges Highly Commended Hotel Chocolat.
EAT’s challenge was one of getting fresh food that has only a one day shelf-life from kitchen to counter, co-ordinating three discrete supply chains – ambient, chilled and frozen. Through working closely with its logistics service provider, Gist, three supply chains have been merged into one logistics operation that delivers service levels of over 99 per cent. “EAT excelled in the execution of a relatively traditional supply chain operation by building a strong partnership with a logistics provider,” said the judges. For this they Highly Commended EAT’s partnership with Gist.
However, the judges were taken with the exemplary transformation of Travis Perkins’ supply chain. “The strategic alignment of the company’s supply chain with its business strategy has provided real competitive value that has invigorated the company,” said the judges. The building materials supplier has implemented initiatives to tackle long-standing industry challenges, from cost-effective large-scale centralisation, to regional distribution of heavy materials – improving lead times, product choice and customer service. Collaboration with suppliers, combined with the high visibility of data, has enabled Travis Perkins to improve the range at its branches. The judges said: “This is a true supply chain transformation that has been undertaken in a logical way and that addresses key customer issues with real understanding. The metrics on performance are strong and the tracking of benefits impressive – this company deserves to win.”
