The UK’s largest cement manufacturer, Lafarge Cement, has adopted an innovative ‘truck, track and trace’ system to enable its drivers to focus on driving and at the same time improve ‘real-time’ communications with its 9,000 customers, having installed a Microlise GPRS system in its new £7M fleet of lorries. This equipment communicates with an online system back in the logistics control room.
Lafarge is using the system’s ability to monitor and predict arrival times to provide accurate data on deliveries and be proactive with its communications with customers. This means that the company can accurately measure the timeliness of its deliveries, as part of its supply chain service commitment to all customers or signify any delays en-route, which can be relayed to the customer with a new estimated arrival time.
