Seventy four BP tanker drivers at the centre of a dispute with oil giant BP have a new final salary pension scheme following talks with the TGWU. The drivers, who had a final salary scheme with their previous employer Exel, will now join the BP Gas final salary plan rather than have a money purchase scheme. Strike action by the drivers has been cancelled.
The tanker drivers were employed by Exel and transferred over to BP in two phases in October after BP took the delivery contract back in-house. BP had told the T&G back in July that they had planned to move the drivers into a money purchase scheme. This was considered to be a backward step by the drivers and the T&G and led to a strike ballot and the calling of five-day strike.
