The flexibility provided by the Working Time Directive’s “Periods of Availability” is key to the way that many companies have organised their lorry operations, according to the latest study produced by NAI Fuller Peiser in conjunction with the Freight Transport Association.
The FTA says any review of the regulations must preserve the present system, which benefits drivers, transport operators and the economy. Deputy chief executive James Hookham said: “In a year when fuel costs have gone up by almost ten per cent and look to stay high, these flexibilities have been a life-saver for many operators.”
