RFID technology has not yet delivered in all that many places, Peter Ward, supply chain and RFID leader for IBM UK told delegates to the Institute of Grocery Distribution’s 6th Retail Logistics Summit in London last month.
Ward and Santosh Takoor, business development manager for SAP, gave a presentation on the Global Commercial Initiative’s (GCI) white paper that it has delivered on the current state of the RFID market. When addressing the industry experts Ward said: “We sort of know don’t we, that we have a situation here where RFID is not delivering what it should be and is stalling, and people keep asking me why we think it’s stalling.”
He also said the industry was getting “bogged down” in proving technology works through pilot schemes. He went on to say that IBM was not entering into technology pilots anymore.
“I’m more than happy to do a business project with someone and I’m more than happy to look at the business benefits, but quite frankly let’s not get hung up on the technology anymore. It’s not helping anyone.”
