Police are speaking to a tanker driver, over fears he may have inadvertently sparked the Buncefield fire, that devastated the Hemel Hempstead fuel depot.
According to a tabloid newspaper, a friend of the driver told how fuel may have ignited when he flicked his engine cut-out switch after detecting a vapour leakage. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has been visiting the Hertfordshire depot and Bob Woodward, manager of the HSE said that the possibility of the tanker driver causing the explosion was just one of the lines officials are looking at as they aim to establish the source of the ignition.
Assistant chief constable Simon Parr confirmed that the tanker driver is currently talking to the police. He added that: “All people who were around the scene at the time of the incident have been spoken to and will be spoken to again in some detail.”
