Amtrak Express Parcels is looking for extra overnight parcel sorting facilities after seeing volumes jump to new records. 70 per cent of Amtrak’s current deliveries are to home addresses and the company has led the move to more convenient delivery times for people at home.
The company already runs two purpose-built hubs in the West Midlands which meet current needs but Amtrak anticipates continued growth in home shopping which will demand extra capacity.
With the continued growth of retail sales via the Internet, the demand for home deliveries has been rising rapidly. Amtrak has boosted its nightly volumes after winning a number of major home delivery contracts with key retailers.
Last year the company extended its evening delivery services nationwide, becoming the first carrier in the UK to offer deliveries up until 8.30pm as part of a standard service offering.
“Amtrak handled record volumes over the Christmas season and with the demand for home deliveries increasing all the time, we are looking to create extra capacity” Says Amtrak’s managing director, Jonathan Smith.
Amtrak also provides special handling for fragile items such as wine, flowers and electrical equipment that Amtrak deliver on behalf of retailers such as Comet, Majestic Wine Warehouses and Empire Direct.
