The Freight Transport Association says that the next edition of the Highway Code should contain a special section dealing with commercial vehicles, similar to the current sections dedicated to pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.
The FTA says that whilst the current Code does contain details of why and how road users should be aware of larger vehicles, it does not presently highlight issues which other road users need to recognise when operating close by commercial vehicles.
Such information could include: the 40mph speed limit for HGVs on single carriageway roads, the speed limiter requirements, vehicle blind spots when turning, manoeuvring and changing carriageways, vehicle and trailer cut in on junctions and roundabouts and the dangers of undertaking goods vehicles.
The FTA has made this proposal in its submission to the Driving Standards Agency review of the Highway Code, pending the publication of a new Code next year.
