Symbol Technologies and Peak Technologies, have both been chosen by Virgin Atlantic Airways, to supply RFID technology to track critical aeroplane components, moving through its supply chain from its Heathrow base.
The project, called TRIM (Tracked by Radio Identification Method), uses RFID tagging and has replaced manual data input and standard barcode labelling. Peak says that it was designed with the specific aim of tracking aeroplane parts and components in the warehouse.
Aeroplane parts are tagged on entry to the warehouse, logged into the inventory system computer and given a full inspection before being issued with an RFID tag. JDA Software group has acquired Manugistics group for £118m. In combining the two companies, JDA says that it will establish a “unique” competitive position as a vertically focused provider to the global demand chain. This is the largest acquisition by JDA, which says that it will “create a definitive market leader with more than 5,550 customers.”
The transaction is expected to be completed later this year.
