Waitrose has bought one of the distribution sites that Morrisons acquired as part of its Safeway takeover and subsequently closed.
Morrisons said the 600,000 sq ft site at Aylesford in Kent had gross assets of £29.97m, consisting of two temperature-controlled warehouses and a large warehouse for groceries.
The new depot is expected to be operational by the middle of 2007 and will be run by 1,000 Waitrose employees, known as ‘Partners’.
A spokesperson for Waitrose confirmed that the supermarket will be running Bracknell and Aylesford distribution centres, while Kuehne and Nagel will continue to operate Brinklow and Bardon.
They also confirmed that the contract with K+N will remain unchanged.
