Many large vans will need speed limiters from the new year to stop them exceeding 56mph. However, the Freight Transport Association says only a few of the vehicles affected have so far been modified.
The legislation applies to all vehicles over 3.5 tonnes fitted with Euro 3 engines and registered between 1 October 2001 and 31 December 2004.
The FTA warns that, as the programme has been on-going for almost two years, it is unlikely that the enforcement agency, the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency, will allow any period of grace.
It is advising operators affected to book calibrations early as there is bound to be a rush during late December.
