Tesco has bought 15 electric vans from Modec for its online food delivery service.
Modec said it had interest from other food companies particularly in the London area as the vans do not require road tax or an MOT and are exempt from congestion charges as well as most parking restrictions.
The vans have a top speed of 50 mph and can cover more than 100 miles on a single eight hour charge, carrying a payload of 2.5 tonnes.
Tesco begins trialling the van in the spring.
