The Society of Motor Manufacturers has given a cautious welcome to the government’s plan to revive Reduced Pollution Certificates for Euro 5 trucks from October this year.
“If it works like the old RPC scheme, it could cut about £500 off the annual Vehicle Excise Duty for a 44 tonner at Euro 5 for the life of the truck and smaller amounts for lighter trucks. This is potentially good news for operators and the environment,” said Robin Dickeson, manager commercial vehicle affairs for the SMMT.
The Society says it understands over 90 per cent of heavy truck registrations in Germany are at Euro 5, on the back of Maut autobahn toll discounts. “This shows what can be done with incentives and we’re pleased the government has listened to our suggestions.”
